Changing trade patterns and their impact on the future of Europe

Annual Dinner 2018: Global Realignment and New Economic Alliances

15 februari 2018

Almost a year ago Donald J. Trump was elected president of the United States. During an intensive campaign, Trump signalled he would redesign the USí international trade policies and negotiate better deals for the US. While having difficulties in living up to many of his other election promises, Trump has withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, is renegotiating the North America Free Trade Agreement and has cast doubt over the Bilateral Investment Treaty with China.

Although there is no official position on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the US and the European Union, negotiations have stalled and the Future of International Trade is at risk. This TTIP was the ambitious mission of Anthony L. Gardner as US Ambassador to the European Union under President Obama, stating it would position both economies for success in the 21st century.

Without a TTIP and with its own internal struggles, the EU has to find new ways to position its economy for success. While Trump’s statements and actions on international trade policies and the EU’s internal struggles have not significantly rocked global financial markets yet, both the EU integration and US - EU relations will be a key driver for financial markets over the coming years.

At the CFA Society VBA Netherlands Annual Dinner 2018, we are very pleased to welcome Jeroen Dijsselbloem and Anthony L. Gardner. Mr. Gardner will discuss the impact of the Trump administration on the US - EU relations and share his views on the future of the EU. He will discuss why we should be worried about colliding views and trade frictions. Jeroen Dijsselbloem will further elaborate on the challenges of EU integration from a financial perspective and discuss possible scenarios for global and European financial markets. Following each presentation you will have ample opportunity to ask questions in our lively Q&A sessions, as well as a great opportunity to discuss your views with other investment professionals from around the world over one of the delicious courses.

Tony Gardner, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, has devoted 27 years of his career to U.S.-European affairs as a government official and lawyer. During his service as U.S. Ambassador, he played a pivotal role in some of the most challenging issues in the U.S.-EU relationship, including the negotiations to conclude a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP), the Privacy Shield Agreement facilitating the transatlantic transfer of personal data by companies based in Europe and the Umbrella Agreement facilitating the transatlantic transfer of data between law enforcement authorities. He was also instrumental in U.S.-EU coordination of sanctions against Russia following its annexation of Crimea and the facilitation of U.S. participation in EU-funded research programs.

Prior to his role as U.S. Ambassador to the EU, Tony served as managing director of a London-based private equity firm and as an Executive Director at GE Capital. He also served as Director for European Affairs on the U.S. National Security Council, where he was responsible for U.S. relations with the EU.
